The Annual Shrine Car Show rolls into Jim Miller Park on August 19-20, 2017. The show setup and swap meet takes place on Friday evening and the main car show takes place on Saturday. Over 100 cars will be on display on Saturday along with food vendors, arts and crafts, and car parts vendors and exhibits.
Admission is free to the viewing public and donations are accepted. Registration for vehicles is $25 at the gate, and pre-registration is available but not required. 100% of the proceeds from the Car Cruz Show benefit Shrine Hospitals for Children.

In a unanimous decision, the Marietta City Council has voted to ban smoking in Marietta’s Glover Park. The outdoor park in Marietta Square plays host to numerous events throughout the year, including rock concerts. After a recent concert, the Marietta City Council received numerous complaints about excessive cigarette and cigar smoke. As a result, smoking is now banned in the park effective immediately, and anyone caught smoking in the park could face fines as high as $500. Several other cities and counties in Georgia have already banned smoking in all public parks, and Marietta may vote to join them and ban smoking in public parks later this month.
Join Summer Santa in historic Marietta Square on Saturday, July 31, 2010 for the 5th Annual Christmas in July and 5k Flamingo Run. Marietta’s Christmas in July features a 5k run (and 1k run and tot trot), VIP Breakfast with Santa, arts and crafts for kids, DJ entertainment, a silent auction, and more. The event benefits Cobb Christmas and you can help “fill the fur bus” by donating a new toy or making a cash donation. The Cobb Symphony Orchestra returns to Glover Park in Marietta Square for a free outdoor concert on Saturday, June 1, 2013 at 8pm. The concert features breathtaking music from the Cobb Symphony Orchestra Jazz Band. The concert is free, and a limited number of tables are available to reserve for a fee.
Enjoy music under the stars and be sure to bring a picnic and blankets or set up your lawn chairs after 4pm (no tarps or tents). Personal tables can be set up in the street on North Park Square after 6pm but not in Glover Park. The free outdoor concert take place at 8pm rain or shine.

Get ready for an old fashioned good time with Sheriff Neil Warren as he hosts the 30th annual Sheriff’s Corn Boilin’. The event takes place from 5:30pm-7:30pm on July 13, 2015 at Jim Miller Park. The annual event of course features plenty of corn but also includes favorites such as cole slaw, cornbread, cantaloupe, fatback, ice cream, watermelon, and more. Tickets are $25 per person and a portion of the proceeds benefit the Cobb County Youth Museum.

The Marietta Soap Box Derby takes place on June 13, 2009 from 9am to 3:30pm at Marietta High School. This free, family-friendly event is an official qualifying event for the All-American Soap Box Derby and is open to children ages 8-17.

Last year, after gaining a wildcard spot in the U.S. Open and then losing in the first round, Melanie Oudin was ranked outside the top 200. Now, just one year later, the 17 year old tennis player from Marietta, Georgia, defeated #13 ranked Nadia Petrova to advance to the quarterfinals at the U.S. Open. Oudin is the youngest woman to reach the quarterfinals at the U.S. Open since Serena Williams who won the tournament in 1999.
This is the first time Melanie Oudin has reached the quarterfinals in a Grand Slam tournament. After defeating Russian stars Elena Dementieva and Maria Sharapova in the previous two rounds, Oudin will play either Caroline Wozniacki of Denmark or 2004 champ Svetlana Kuznetsova from Russia next.
Marietta currently has four red light cameras (with more coming soon) that are use to detect when a vehicle crosses a designated stopping place after a traffic light becomes red. The red light cameras issue automatic citations using the vehicle license plate information. When a driver is issued a $70 ticket, it is classified as a civil penalty and is not reported to the driver’s insurance company and it is not added to the driver’s record.
Watch for the “Photo Enforced” signs at intersections.
Red light cameras are in operation at the following four intersections in the City of Marietta:
A motion to enter negotiations with Marietta City Schools for the establishment of two school camera zones was approved at a City of Marietta Public Works Committee meeting on July 25, 2023.
The effectiveness of red light cameras in preventing accidents is a topic of ongoing debate and research. Proponents argue that these cameras can serve as a deterrent, encouraging drivers to obey traffic signals and reducing the number of red light violations, which, in turn, can potentially lead to a decrease in right-angle accidents at intersections. These right-angle accidents are sometimes referred to as a t-bone or broadside collision where the front of one vehicle hits the side of another at a right angle, forming a “T” shape. These types of collisions can cause serious injuries such as whiplash, bone fractures, organ injuries, and traumatic brain injuries.
On the other hand, critics contend that red light cameras may not significantly impact accident rates and could, in some cases, lead to an increase in rear-end collisions as drivers brake abruptly to avoid receiving a citation. A red light camera study that examined traffic accidents for 3 large Texas cities over a 12-year period found that after hundreds of thousands of accidents, there was “no evidence that red light cameras improve public safety. They don’t reduce the total number of vehicle accidents, the total number of individuals injured in accidents or the total number of incapacitating injuries that involve ambulance transport to a hospital.”
Using cameras to issue traffic citations is a process that frequently faces intense scrutiny, as many perceive it as a means to generate revenue rather than prioritizing public safety. Often, as is the case in the City of Marietta, these programs are administered by out-of-state private businesses that profit from each ticket issued, which further fuels skepticism about their true intentions and effectiveness.
In 2008, the City of Marietta collected $1,500,000 and netted a profit of almost $1,000,000 after expenses from the red light cameras. 2009 revenues at all three intersections were $1,420,466, minus expenses of $553,844, equaling a profit of $866,622 for the city. 2010 revenues were $1,322,928, minus expenses of $434,808, equaling a profit of $888,120 for the City of Marietta. More recently, the city was said to have collected $673,000 on 2022 and $628,000 in 2023.
Unincorporated Cobb County does not currently have any red light cameras.

Marietta native Melanie Oudin is a 17 year old tennis player with promising future. Currently ranked at 124, Melanie is advancing through the rounds at Wimbledon, much to the upset of some other major players. After three qualifying rounds, Melanie played her first match in the main draw of Wimbledon and her first main draw in any Grand Slam, and defeated her opponent Sybille Bammer in three sets winning 4-6, 6-4, 6-2. In the second round, Melanie played Yaroslava Shvedova and won again in three sets, 3-6, 6-2, 6-4. Today, she played Jelena Jankovic, currently ranked #6 in the world, on the show courts of Wimbledon. She started off strong against Jankovich; however, she lost a little of her aggressiveness and lost the first set in a tie break. Jankovich then took a thirteen minute time out to tend to some dizziness, but Oudin stayed focused. In the second set, she started fighting and did not quit. She won the second set with close scores and great determination. Oudin continued her great game paly in the third set and went on to win the match with a score of 6-7, 7-5, 6-2 against the former #1 player in the world. She now advances to the Wimbledon round of 16.
