Gone With the Wind 75th Anniversary

The stars gather once again to honor Margaret Mitchell and her famous novel
Marietta, Ga., hosts “A Tribute to Margaret Mitchell: The Book That Touched the World”

Cast members Ann Rutherford, Mickey Kuhn, and Patrick Curtis will return to Scarlett and Rhett country on June 10-11, 2011 when the Marietta Gone With the Wind Museum-Scarlett on the Square, hosts “A Tribute to Margaret Mitchell: The Book That Touched The World.” This two-day event will celebrate the book’s 75th birthday in style with interviews, Q&A sessions, autograph signings with the celebrities, an author’s panel discussion, breakfast with the stars, dinner and a program, and more. Supporting partner, Georgia Public Broadcasting has plans to release the long-awaited documentary about Margaret Mitchell on June 30th on GPB at 8:00 p.m. Locals should tune in as many of the scenes were filmed in and around Marietta and feature a few familiar faces from the immediate area. Book your Tribute package by calling the museum at 770-794-5145 or emailing csutherland@mariettaga.gov. See what the package includes at www.gwtwmarietta.com.

Want to celebrate 75 years of the world’s best-selling novel?
The Tribute package has more to offer than you might imagine. An in-depth interview (The Golden Age of Hollywood) with Ann Rutherford (“Carreen O’Hara”) and a talk-fest (Here’s Looking at You Kid) with Mickey Kuhn (“Young Beau Wilkes”-GWTW), Patrick Curtis (“Baby Beau”-GWTW), Karolyn Grimes (“Zuzu”-It’s A Wonderful Life), and Morgan Brittany (“Baby June”-Gypsy.

“I can’t wait to see Karolyn (Grimes)”, says Mickey Kuhn. “We grew up in Hollywood together and I haven’t seen her in at least 60 years.”

Also part of the Tribute package is a panel discussion with authors Anne Edwards (Road to Tara, The Life of Margaret Mitchell), Susan Lindsley (Susan Myrick of Gone With the Wind, An Autobiographical Biography), Marianne Walker (Margaret Mitchell and John Marsh, The Love Story Behind GWTW), and John Wiley (Margaret Mitchell’s Gone With the Wind: A Bestseller’s Odyssey from Atlanta to Hollywood). Each will discuss how Mitchell’s novel affected their lives and the writing of their own books.

Rounding out the package is dinner with all the celebrities at Hamilton’s at the Hilton. Two programs will take place following dinner, one in which lucky fans will be randomly selected to act out scenes with the actual stars from various movies. Chris Sullivan, owner of the extraordinary collection housed at the Marietta Gone With the Wind Museum-Scarlett on the Square, will interview Anne Edwards about her interesting life and first-hand accounts of Vivien Leigh, Judy Garland, and other major Hollywood stars about whom she has written biographies. An autograph signing, fan swap-meet, and tours of the museum will take place and renowned artist Joseph Yakovetic will render a “live” Gone With the Wind painting to be auctioned on the final day of the event.

The museum, established in 2003 in a circa 1875 building that was formerly a cotton warehouse. The collection includes costumes and jewelry, signed first editions and contracts, movie props and scripts, scene drawings, posters, photographs and nearly 100 dolls, among its treasures—a veritable time capsule of the life and times of Margaret Mitchell, her seminal novel and the filming of the movie. Of special note is the famous Bengaline gown worn by Vivien Leigh as Scarlett O’Hara in the movie’s honeymoon scene. On special exhibit at the museum will be 70th Anniversary GWTW artwork by famed artist Joseph Yakovetic.

The Show House is presented by the Marietta/Cobb Museum of Art and features original artwork in several different mediums. The home will also showcase southeastern art and jewelry in the neighboring historic Lawrence House.

The design roster included both young and seasoned metro-Atlanta based designers with vision and design expertise not seen in a project of this nature in Cobb County, including: Leigh Ann Bushey, Cindy Davidson, Sue Dean, Ginger Gaddy, Jerome Garrison, Ann Gronewald, Susan Hardy, Melinda Heidt, Nancy Hildreth, Chris Hutcheson, Molly Johnson, Kathy Kuruc, Beth Meyer, Clark Miller, Barbara Moran, Ann Morris, Yvonne Portwood, Kelli Wallace, Tony Whitlock, Debbie Withrow, and Anne Young.

Coming of Age in Marietta: Conversations with the Marietta’s Elite Social Club

Join the Cobb County Public Library System staff for a National Library Week event, ‘Coming of Age in Marietta: Conversations with the Marietta’s Elite Social Club,’ April 14, 2011 from 1-2 p.m. at the Central library in Marietta. The ‘Coming of Age in Marietta’ event is a round-table session about Cobb County history through the eyes of the ‘Elite Social Club’ members, a social club of African American women that started more than 50 years ago. The members outgrew their initial intent, a sewing club. In a society and time that did not permit African Americans to join social clubs, the ladies blossomed into friends who provided each other strength and encouragement.

National Library Week is a celebration of libraries and the contributions of library staffs. This year’s theme, ‘Create Your Own Story @ the Library,’ emulates a timely message about preserving history.

In this forum, hear the stories of the Elite Social Club ladies and the history they lived: enduring struggles, witnessing changes, and raising children.
