Gun Safety Seminar

The Marietta Police Department’s Training Unit will host a Firearm Safety Seminar on Thursday, March 12, 2015. This seminar is designed for civilians and will cover a variety of topics to include safety, laws, and alternative weapon usage. The seminar is free of charge.

“This program has been developed to educate the citizens on current firearm laws and weapon safety.  We want to equip citizens with the knowledge and skills so they feel confident owning and handling a firearm or weapon if they choose to do so,” says Lieutenant Jake King of the Marietta Police Training Unit.

The Firearm Safety Seminar will be held on Thursday, March 12, 2015, in Marietta City Hall Council Chambers, 205 Lawrence Street Marietta. In order to secure a seat in this seminar please respond by email to dbaldwin@mariettaga.gov leaving your name, telephone number and number of requested seats. The seminar will begin at 6:30 p.m. The following topics will be covered:

  • Firearm/Weapon Safety
  • Firearm/Weapon Law
  • Recommended Home Defense Weapons
  • Civilian Model Stun Guns
  • Carry/Use of Pepper Spray

This seminar is lecture based only and citizens are not required to bring anything. Information packets will be provided to attendees. The seminar is open to all ages and is approximately two hours in length. Please do not bring any firearms or weapons to the seminar.

Marietta author Harry Lembeck Book Signing

Marietta author, Harry Lembeck, to discuss Taking on Theodore Roosevelt: How One Senator Defied the President on Brownsville and Shook American Politics

Theodore Roosevelt historian, Harry Lembeck, will discuss and sign his just released book, Taking on Theodore Roosevelt: How One Senator Defied the President on Brownsville and Shook American Politics, at , on . This book investigates Roosevelt’s controversial action discharging the black soldiers from the army “without” honor” and without trial, recounts the heroic challenge to his decision by Republican Senator Joseph Foraker of his own party, and considers how Roosevelt’s uncompromising stance may have affected black Americans and their support for the party of Lincoln.

Presidential historian Douglas Brinkley highly recommends this book and Tweed Roosevelt, president of the Theodore Roosevelt Association, said Lembeck’s experience “gives him a unique perspective on an unfortunate chapter in Theodore Roosevelt’s presidential history. Readers will enjoy this engaging and informative book.” Sixty-seven years after the event, President Nixon finally corrected Roosevelt’s action.
Mr. Lembeck resides in Marietta GA and is a member of Congregation Ner Tamid, has spoken about Roosevelt at meetings and seminars of historical organizations and acted as a historical adviser for a PBS program on peonage called Slavery by Another Name.

Purim Carnival & Silent Auction

Congregation Ner Tamid will have its annual Purim Celebration on Sunday, March 1, 2015 starting with the Megillah Reading at 11:30am sharp. A Purim Carnival, including games plus a bouncy house, & Silent Auction will follow from Noon to 2pm, rain or shine, at Congregation Ner Tamid, 1349 Old Hwy 41, Suite 220, Marietta GA 30060.

Entrance fee is $18 per child. Parents FREE!! Food will be served at an extra cost: (cash only). Simultaneously with the Purim Carnival, there will be a Silent Auction, with items donated by Congregants, friends and local businesses. MUTTropolitan Pet Fashion Show

The Premier of MUTTropolitan Pet Fashion Show

The Marietta “MUTTropolitan Pet Fashion Show” makes its runway debut on Saturday, February 28, 2015. This event benefits the Cobb County Animal Control Shelter, Ahimsa House, a non-profit organization that helps shelter people and pets that have to flee their home because of domestic violence, and PAWSitive Supporters, a non-profit group doing spay/neuters in low income areas of Cobb County.

The event will be at Jim Miller Park in exhibit halls A & B (enter parking on Calloway Rd.) from 2-6pm on February 28th, 2015. The star of the event will be the dogs on the runway of the fashion show. There will be pet related vendors, entertainment, light food and beverages, and a silent auction, all benefiting the shelter and the two non-profit organizations. Cobb County Animal Control will be bringing dogs that are available for adoption, and also collecting unexpired, unopened dog or cat food to donate to the local pet food bank, Cooper’s Cupboard.

Hunter’s Helping Hands 5K and Family Fun Day

4th Annual Hunter’s Helping Hands 5K Run and Fun Day. All proceeds will benefit the Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation.
There will be a 5K at 8am, 1K at 9am, Tot Trot at 9:20am, followed by a Family Fun Day from 10am to 3pm. The 5K is a Peachtree Road Race qualifier with chip timing and the Fun Day will feature human hamster balls, euro bungee, inflatables, live music, food trucks, arts and craft vendors, online raffle and more.

Touchstones to the Past: Cemetery Walking Tours

Join the Marietta Museum of History for a walk through history at the Marietta City Cemetery. With newly “unearthed” research Museum Registrar, Christa McCay, will discuss the origins of the Cemetery and delve into stories of Marietta’s pioneering families.

Please note that tours are conducted on gravel & uneven pathways, so please plan accordingly.

Guns & Growlers

Come join the Marietta Museum of History on March 21, 2015 for Guns and Growlers. The evening event is for those who appreciate fine craftsmanship of weapons and beer! This event is a fundraising effort for the museum and a chance to highlight their world class gun collection.

Guest experts on guns and beer will be on hand to answer questions (such as Dan Cox, Founder and CEO of the Marietta Museum of History and antique gun expert Greg Bettis with the Holly Springs Police Dept.) and a special selection of guns from their 200+ antique gun collection will be out on exhibit. They invite you to take a closer look while you sip and savor some local brews.

Growlers on tap will be provided by Schoolhouse Beer and Brewing and delicious food by Creations by Cookie.

An Evening With History – The Civil War Soldier, Who Were They?

The Civil War Soldier, Who Were They?: African-Americans buried in the Marietta National Cemetery.

Join the staff of the Marietta Museum of History as they welcome their favorite Civil War historian, Brad Quinlin. Brad is a walking encyclopedia of the Marietta National Cemetery. On February 26, 2015 at 7pm, in honor of Black History month, Brad will regale us with stories of African–American Civil War Soldiers buried in the National Cemetery.

Evening with History is held in the Tumlin Community Room of the Marietta Museum of History located at One Depot Street.
