Who was Jennie T. Anderson?

Virginia “Jennie” Tate Anderson, born on September 22, 1912, in Tate, Georgia, was a notable figure in Marietta’s history. After her father’s death in 1916, her family relocated to Marietta. She pursued higher education at Emory University, where she graduated in 1933 with a bachelor’s degree in History and Governmental Studies. Shortly after, she became the first Director of the Cobb County Department of Public Welfare.

In 1939, Jennie married James T. Anderson, Jr., and they had four children. Her involvement in the Marietta community and the state of Georgia was extensive. She served on various commissions, including the Parks and Recreation Commission for Cobb County and the Georgia Trust for Historic Preservation. Jennie co-founded the Cobb Landmarks and Historical Society and held leadership roles in several organizations, including the Garden Club of Georgia and the Northwest Georgia Girl Scout Council.

Jennie and her husband were philanthropists, contributing significantly to local landmarks and organizations. Her enduring impact on the community led to the naming of the Jennie T. Anderson Theatre in her honor. Built in 1989, the theatre commemorates her dedication and service to Marietta and Cobb County.
